1 in 5 Canadians will experience a mental illness at some point in their life, and everyone will be affected either personally or through a family member, friend, or co-worker. Mental illness can affect the way people feel, think, and behave and may make it challenging for them to cope with the demands of everyday life. However, mental illnesses can be treated and people can improve their health and well-being.

A person may have an addiction if they use a substance, such as alcohol or drugs, or participate in an activity, such as gambling, in ways that have a negative effect on their daily life. Addictions can contribute to problems with relationships, money, work, and the law, and some people who have mental health problems also have substance use problems. However, addictions can be treated and people can learn to manage them and improve their wellness.
For more information on addictions, visit the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health’s website (link will open in new window).
